Abbey of St. George, Perast, Bay of Kotor

In the vicinity of Our Lady of the Rock, the island that arose from the deep sea by effort of men, lies the St George, the island of entirely different nature and destiny. Surrounded by stone walls, and concealed from view by tall cypress trees, this island looks as if hiding a secret and doesn’t let the curious eyes to interfere with somehow creepy tranquility of this island.

The only trace of people on the island is the Benedictine monastery from the 12th century, as the most of the island is occupied by a cemetery in which are buried the inhabitants of Perast and countless other cities in the Bay. Empty of human life and voice of the living, the island received, by the people, a gloomy name – the island of the dead.

Its name derives from St. George, the patron saint of Kotor, and in ancient times, it was a lot closer to the coast and Risan. As of 6th century and a great cataclysm which struck the area, when the part of the coast, with the former Risan, were forever lost at sea due to an earthquake, the island has become more and more lonesome and secluded.

In a strange twist of fate, on this island has never been a joy or pleasure, but only sadness, crying and dying. Few temporary residents were there until they die or leave, adding another scary label to the island – the city of the dead. The Benedictine monks planted on the island a numerous cypress trees, symbols of death and disappearance, which they sprung up and flourished, despite the belief that nothing can grow or thrive on the island, due to little soil and damnation.

Even one of the Popes cursed the island with an official decree, because of the murder of a priest on the island, making the island more avoided for fear of anathema.

When the famous Boka captain Ivo Vizin was returning from a journey around the world, priests, Benedictines, greeted him by waving the white sheets. Today the island has no white sheets to welcome the ships that sail the Bay. There is only black canopy of cypress and eternal peace of the inhabitants of the island of the dead.
